First Thursdays' Light Extravaganza - 4 August 2016, 6 - 9pm

Visitors to K' Road's signature late night art event First Thursdays can expect to 'see the light' next month. The theme for the event, scheduled for 4 August, is The Great Light Way – a play on the term used to describe a new community lighting project introduced to the street in the 1930's dubbed The Great White Way.

The new under verandah lighting, coupled with window displays which now remained lit after hours, combined with colourful flashing neon advertising provided by four local cinemas all contributed to a dazzling 'Broadway' feeling on the strip – a feeling which attracted late night shoppers in droves.

First Thursdays, the Great Light Way hopes to create a similar effect, attracting locals and visitors to a spectacle of white and coloured light illuminating the street from east to west. Fire dancers, light sculptures, dancers performing with luminous hula hoops and coloured neon displays triggered by electronic music are just some of the light exhibitions on offer.

Additional highlights on the night include an AUT creative technologies COLAB display, a recycled space lamp exhibition and a roving performance by Mary Jane O' Reilly's White Nights Marching Girls. Cafes and restaurants will be open for street dining by candlelight, Twice as Nice Markets will pop up in La Gonda and Cross St Arcades and flame-grilled street food will feature at K' Road's west end.
