Capital Photographer of the Year 2021

ENTRIES NOW OPEN FOR CAPITAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

A love letter to the Wellington region – a celebration of our creativity, land, and tangata whenua.

Capital magazine brings you one of the biggest photography competitions our region has ever seen – Capital Photographer of the Year! And to make sure everyone has the opportunity to submit an image there is no entry fee for the inaugural competition.

Capital Photographer of the Year (CPotY) celebrates Wellington and the wider region, its beauty, its creativity and its people. “One of our aims with Capital magazine is to showcase the best photographic talent the region has to offer, Capital Photographer of the Year is a natural evolution,” says Shalee Fitzsimmons (Ngāti Tūwharetoa), Capital’s Art Director and Convener of CPotY, “we ultimately want a collection of images that represent our region and creative talent.”

Mazz Scannell, a die-hard Wellingtonian and keen amateur photographer, realised during lockdown that Wellington did not have a regional photography competition. “This is completely out of step with other New Zealand cities,” says Mazz. “Armed with a few ideas I approached editor Alison Franks who relished the chance to celebrate the region and the creativity of the people who call it home. Together we developed Capital Photographer of the Year 2021.”

Six categories, each with a $500 prize, celebrate different aspects of the region. The Whenua category endeavours to capture the beauty of Wellington’s backyard, the Triptych category encourages storytelling through imagery, and the Mobile category is for people who fancy their ability with a phone. A special Youth category for under 18-year-olds has been designed to align with NCEA. The Society category is sponsored by the Masonic Villages Trust and architecture firm Warren and Mahoney are sponsoring the Structure category.

The Supreme winner – Capital Photographer of the Year 2021 – will receive a further $1000 gifted by Mazz Scannell. Other supporters of CPotY include Splendid Photo, HuttValleyNZ, and Art Zone magazine.

Finalists will be chosen by a panel of judges made up of top photographers and creative talent. A full list of judges will be announced later this month.

What is Capital?

Capital magazine is produced by Capital Publishing Ltd, located in Mt Victoria. Led by Managing Editor Alison Franks, Capital Publishing has been working with local writers, poets, photographers, designers and illustrators to tell the stories of the wider Wellington region for more than seven years.

This year Capital received an Award of Excellence in the International Creative Media Awards, which honours outstanding design and concept.

In 2020 Capital’s Art Director Shalee Fitzsimmons (Ngāti Tūwharetoa) was awarded Best Designer at the Webstar Magazine Media Awards – New Zealand’s top design award for magazines. Capital columnist Melody Thomas was also recognised, receiving a Highly Commended Award in the Best Columnist category for her regular women, parenting and family focused “Wahine” column.
